Iwobi Secures Fulham’s First League Win
Alex Iwobi’s goal secures Fulham’s first Premier League win of the season, lifting them off the bottom and marking a crucial victory for coach Arbeloa.
Alex Iwobi scored the only goal as Fulham beat Hull City 1-0 to claim their first Premier League victory of the season and climb out of the relegation zone.
The midfielder struck in the 33rd minute at Craven Cottage, ending a six-match winless start and handing head coach Alvaro Arbeloa his first league success since replacing Marco Silva in July.
Fulham moved onto five points, lifting themselves off the bottom of the table, while Hull remained ninth.
Arbeloa stressed the importance of the result ahead of a trip to Coventry next Saturday and an EFL Cup meeting with Crystal Palace the following Wednesday.
The Fulham boss said his players had earned their breakthrough through hard work, having produced encouraging performances without securing the results to match.
Against Hull, they finally turned their dominance into three points.
The decisive moment came shortly after the half-hour mark in the clubs’ 100th meeting across all competitions.
Hull failed twice to clear the danger before Sander Berge picked out Iwobi on the edge of the penalty area.
His low, curling effort deflected off Lucas Herrington and slipped beneath goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who will have been disappointed not to keep it out.
Fulham had opportunities to extend their advantage.
Garcia headed against the crossbar, while Tzolakis denied both Iwobi and Josh King.
Hull offered little in response.
Mohamed Belloumi dragged one of their better chances wide after the interval, and the visitors finished without a shot on target.
The hosts’ afternoon was marred by Ryan Sessegnon’s dismissal in stoppage time after his studs caught the back of Robinio Vaz’s calf.
Despite finishing with 10 men, Fulham protected their lead to secure a much-needed victory.
Fulham’s patience earns its reward
Arbeloa’s approach received a timely boost after a difficult opening stretch that had yielded just two points from six matches.
Although there had been no widespread unrest, another defeat against newly promoted opposition would have increased pressure on the Spaniard.
Instead, Fulham remained committed to their passing game and controlled proceedings with 76.2% possession.
Their 717 passes represented their highest total in a Premier League fixture this season.
Iwobi provided experience and creativity in midfield, supported by the energy of Oscar Bobb, Shea Charles and King.
The narrow scoreline did not fully reflect Fulham’s superiority, with the crossbar and Tzolakis preventing a more comfortable margin.
Iwobi also backed his manager afterwards, praising Arbeloa’s communication and understanding of the players while emphasising the squad’s determination to deliver for him.
With important fixtures approaching, this victory gives Fulham a platform to build confidence in their performances and their manager’s methods.
Hull struggle to threaten
Hull’s lack of attacking threat will concern head coach Sergej Jakirovic more than the narrow defeat.
For the first time since facing Crystal Palace in May 2017, the Tigers completed a Premier League match without registering a shot on target.
They spent much of the afternoon chasing possession, while attempts to play more directly were comfortably handled by Fulham’s defence.
Belloumi’s wayward second-half effort and a late free-kick sent high into the stands summed up a frustrating outing.
Hull’s ability to stay within one goal offered some encouragement, keeping the contest alive despite the hosts’ control.
However, they will need to offer considerably more going forward to prevent this performance from becoming a pattern.
Their encouraging start to life back in the top flight has left them ninth, but this was a reminder of the improvement still required.
