A Significant Breakthrough After a Long Goal Drought
Phil Foden has shown positive signs that he is capable of returning to his best form, ending a goal drought that lasted more than 10 months during Manchester City’s 3–2 victory over Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Saturday.
The English midfielder’s return to the scoresheet was more than just a fleeting moment; his goal celebration carried meaningful messages regarding his relationship with the club and its supporters—at a time when City is looking to rediscover the version of the player that once shone brightly in the team’s jersey.
This was Foden’s first goal since December 14, when he found the net against Crystal Palace in a 3–0 win.
His return to scoring came in his first appearance since receiving a red card against Manchester United a month earlier.
The *Manchester Evening News* reported: "Foden celebrated his goal with a clenched fist, acknowledged his teammate Jérémy Doku—who provided the assist—and then engaged with the fans at the Etihad Stadium, pointing to the Manchester City badge on his shirt in front of the South Stand."
The outlet added: "This moment reflected a strong bond between the player, the club, and its supporters, offering a positive signal that Foden could reclaim his standing within the team."
The player had enjoyed a stellar run during the first half of last season—scoring 6 goals in 5 matches—before his form dipped in the second half. He subsequently struggled to secure a regular starting spot and found it difficult to make decisive contributions.
An alarm bell for Rayan Cherki? The report continues: "Despite the positive performance against Ipswich Town, a single match is not enough to conclude that Foden will secure a permanent spot as a playmaker—at the expense of Rayan Cherki—but the signs he showed were encouraging."
Foden appeared more liberated after scoring his goal; he moved well to receive the ball, delivering simple, precise passes. During the second half, he also pushed forward to support Erling Haaland, though he was unable to connect with the ball as intended.
He further demonstrated a willingness to provide passing options, dropping back to receive the ball from Marc Guéhi in the middle of the pitch before laying it off to Joško Gvardiol—though the latter mishandled it, sending the ball out of play.
"I deserved this goal."
Foden left the pitch in the 77th minute to a warm reception from the City fans. He will be hoping for another start—and another goal—when the team hosts AEK Athens this Tuesday in the Champions League.
Reflecting on his return to the scoresheet, Foden remarked: "For sure, I’ve deserved this goal for a while now."
The player hopes that breaking his goal drought will provide a morale boost, helping him regain his best form and deliver what Manchester City expects from him in the coming period.
